Ava

"Good afternoon Ava," Miss said, letting me into the English room. Like in maths, I sat by the desk, and got my book out. The morning had been smooth, and Mr Carter had let me stay in the room for lunch because the quiet was blissful today.

I got my finished opening out for Miss and took it to her.

"Sorry I didn't have my work yesterday,"

"That's okay," she smiled, "things can get busy,"

"I'm sorry if you can't read it, I tried really hard,"

"I can tell, it's still a work in progress but it's shaping up,"

"Dad has been helping me,"

"Do you think you could practice over summer?"

"I'm going to. Dad and Viola have really nice handwriting, but I haven't really done proper writing for very long,"

"I get it," she nodded, "do you think you could do all the work today?"

"I can try,

"What we are doing is going through the homework, which you can use to go through some spellings, then looking at how to improve writing with different punctuation and sentence types. Your opening looks really good,"

"Please can you help me spell mischievous?" I asked, handing her my vocab book. It was something I'd been given so that if there were specific words I struggled with, Miss could write them for me.

Soon, the class started to file in, the seat next to me empty. I didn't mind, but I guessed it would've been nice to have a friend there.

I practiced spellings for a bit, then miss took the register and I knew the lesson would begin. She never picked on me, and I didn't like to put my hand up, so I was just peacefully sat in the corner.

I tried my best to keep up with the class, using words I knew from my books. Often, they really helped.

Miss set us off with a task and I sat thinking, not completely understanding. Every so often, someone shouted and it made me jump, but I was more intrigued by someone's whispers.

"That's the one who like girls,"

"Her? She doesn't even speak, how would you know?"

"She was talking to Owen about it, and I saw Julie kiss her! I mean, we all knew Julie liked girls but at least she is pretty, and normal,"

"Isn't she like, adopted?"

"Yeah, no surprise. Look at her,"

"Savanna, you can't say that,"

"Whoops. I just did. She always gets to hang around with Harry as well,"

"His brother is her dad, leave her alone, you don't know what she's been through,"

"Ashton? He's a dentist though, and her teeth look rank. Her whole face does,"

"You know she can probably hear you,"

"Good, she deserves to hear it. She's just weird. I heard she sees a therapist,"

"My brother does,"

"Yeah, but your brother is normal. She doesn't talk, or let people near her. All she does is suck up to teachers and go to the office if she doesn't like lessons. I can't believe she didn't even tell Amber or Sapphire she was bi. Everyone only just found out she was dating Julie,"

Shit.

"Savanna, it wasn't your place to tell everyone. I don't think you realise how hard this can be for people, and I'm sure she has a fair chunk of struggles already,"
