Elaine rang Cassie the next morning around eleven. "Hey," she said. "I did an online search on the widow Miller.
"Oh?"
"Yeah, mostly newspapers. Found an obit from Orange County.
Number one's name was William Payton. The obit said that he died suddenly and they asked for donations to the American Heart Association, in lieu of flowers. Must have been a heart attack."
The line got quiet for a moment, before Cassie replied. "Nothing sinister about that. Anything else? Any relatives?"
"A sister-in-law in Riverside. I also found their wedding announcement. It's from two years earlier:
"Mr. and Mrs. William Payton were married today in a small ceremony at the home of the groom's sister, Madelyn Payton. The bride, nee Paula Blaine, wore an ivory colored Chanel suit. The couple will reside in Newport Beach. The groom owns a chain of hardware stores located throughout the southwest and headquartered in Texas."
"Newport Beach? You're kidding. What year was that?"
"2000, why?"
"I worked near there for a while, at Hoag Hospital."
