"Did you visit?"
"No, but I'm going tomorrow."
"Really?" Steve said. But Elaine got the impression he wasn't surprised.
"You don't seem as surprised as I thought," she said. "What's going on?"
"I've been talking to Tom lately," Steve said. "Over lunch, two or three times."
"Having lunch with Tom is not so unusual."
"Yes, well, the topic of our conversations certainly was."
"What do you mean?"
"Tom's been telling me quite a fantastic story. Seems he might divorce Cassie."
Elaine drew a deep breath, weaving all manner of implausible webs in her mind. But she said nothing, waiting for Steve to finish.
"You remember when Billy stayed out all night?"
"Of course."
"Billy told Tom he was at Paula's house."
Elaine felt chills.
"Paula told Billy that she was his real mother and asked him if he'd like to come live with her."
"No wonder he wouldn't say anything that night." Elaine whispered.
