Part 6

He was on the phone with their family physician when he heard his wife screaming.

"This is all your fault!" Cass was hysterically yelling at Elaine. "What's wrong with you, anyway?"

"Me?' Elaine, terrified of her friend, was moving away from her and almost backed herself into the pool, again.

"Honey," Tom came rapidly to Cass's side and tried to calm her. It was no use, she was uncontrollable; she stood, threw off her towel and began pacing up and down and wringing her hands.

"For God's sake Elaine, what happened? What did you say to her?"

"I think she's having a breakdown, Tom," was all Elaine could get out. Cassie was sobbing convulsively.

"And no wonder with all that's been going on."

Elaine didn't ask, but felt a twinge of guilt.

In the background they could hear an ambulance coming nearer. By the time it arrived, Cassie had become strangely mute.

"You'd better go, Elaine," he said as the techs evaluated Cassie.  "We'll talk later."

(To be continued).
