"I worked so hard becoming the best nurse that I could...Elaine. You don't understand!" She said, practically shouting now.
Terrified suddenly of her friend, Elaine took one more step back and stepped right into the pool.
Transfixed, Cassie hesitated for only a second before she dove in.
Like most drowning people, especially those who cannot swim, Elaine fought furiously and Cassie could not get near her. But somehow Elaine finally managed to reach the side of the pool and grab onto the concrete rim. After that she was able to make her way down to the shallow end.
They stepped up out of the pool and Cassie reached for her friend's arm. Elaine shrank from her.
"Stay away from me Cass." She said, grimly and went to get her purse.
Just at that moment Tom and Billy came out onto the patio. Seeing both women fully clothed and wet, Billy spoke first:
"What happened, Mom?"
"She fell in, Billy," Cassie said. "Get us some towels, will you?"
"Sure, Mom," he said and went into the house.
Sensing more was involved, Tom said: "What's wrong.
