"Good morning... Open those pretty brown eyes for me Champ.." I chuckled as my youngest simply screwed his face up at me. "You can't have any pancakes if you don't wake up Dylan," I added playfully. One eye opened curiously but quickly closed again as he started to squirm on his mattress. His cheeks were pink and hot.

I frowned and pressed a hand against his forehead to gage a feel for any excess heat.
"Oh whoa I don't think you're going to be going to school today Dyl," I murmured, feeling the warmth soak into my hand, "are you feeling a bit sick?"

"My tummy..." He whined sadly, "feels bad."
Internally I groaned. A stomach bug was just what we needed right now. On top of all the stress Ellie's got on her shoulders from work and the parents interview after school with Tora's teacher it was going to cause a bit of a problem.
"How about you hop up out of bed and we'll go see if we have any medicine to help your tummy, is that okay Buddy? It'll just be for a few minutes so we can see what Mum thinks and then you can come back to bed if you'd like."
He nodded merely and let me help him out of bed onto ginger legs. With a huff and a disappointed pout he took my hand and we started for the door.

"Hey Li, I've gotta go, but Tora's got a fever okay? So you're gonna have to stay home with her! I'm sorry Li, you know I'd do it if I could!"
My shoulders slumped and I let out a sigh, thumping a closed fist against my forehead. Great, there was one thing worse than one stomach bug and that was two.
"What's the matter Daddy?" Dylan questioned quietly, tugging at my hand. I shook my head as the front door opened and closed, signalling Ellie's departure, "nothing Love, I'm just looking forward to having a day at home with you and your sister."
"Okay..." Dylan nodded, smiling a little.

Out in the kitchen Tora was sitting at the bench in her school uniform, trying to tie her hair up. She was eight years old now but Ellie left for work early so teaching her how to do was a job left for me and I was definitely no expert.
I frowned as I let Dylan sit down on the couch, tossing a blanket over his little form, "mum said you had a fever Babe, you can't go to school today."
I walked over to feel her head only for her to slide down out of her seat and away from my wandering hand, "I'm not sick Dad, I can go to school."
It was fairly obvious she was sick. While Dylan's face was flushed and pink hers was the complete opposite and as white as paper, paired with dark bags under her dull green eyes.
"Tora..." I murmured empathetically, "it's okay if you're not feeling well. Dylan's sick too."
She simply shook her head, radiating the stubbornness she'd inherited from her mum, "I feel fine, great, I wanna run a mile!"
Her false smile wavered slightly and she turned away, disappearing into the next room before I could say anything. I didn't know why she was being so strange, usually she was a clingy kind of sick, whiny and cuddly but now she was being so different.
"When are we leaving for school Dad?" She poked her head back into the room.
"We're not Love, not today," I said apologetically. I earned a glare for my efforts.

"Uh, Daddy, my tummy feels really funny..." Dylan squeaked in a panicked tone. I whirled around to see him fidgeting and swallowing hard and knowing what was about to come next I hurried him into the bathroom, already feeling awful for the little guy.
He started fighting against me, trying to go in the other direction, "don't wanna throw up Dad, no!"
"It'll be all over in just a few minutes Champ, come on Dyl," I encouraged, pushing him further into the bathroom. Even if I couldn't get him over the toilet the tiles were a much better bet than the brand new carpet out in the hall.
In the end he coughs and throws last nights dinner up onto the ground beside the sink while crying and hugging at his tummy. I did my best to comfort him but he was past terrified and it took way longer than I expected to reduce the sobbing to hiccuping and shaking.
By that point over half an hour had passed and my little man was just about asleep on my shoulder.
