I'm just entering the eighth grade at a school I transferred to in the middle of fall last year. Upon arrival I made friends with a girl named Daniela, a Dominican-Venezuelan girl, who was five-foot-eight and had curves I'd love to have.

I started to hang out with her group and realized how much bullying she received. She was a D-cup bra, and many boys believed they were fake.

I remember one day at lunch, she told me how a boy asked her if she stuffed her bra. Another day she told me how some boys would "accidentally" brush up against her chest or butt, but she was too scared to say anything.

Daniela told me how when she was younger, she was fat. Now, many people call themselves fat and they aren't, but Daniela was actually fat and struggled with her weight. Not only that, her self-confidence was already low. She had few friends. Maybe three that she actually cared about and vice versa.

She loves belly-shirts, but she hasn't tried to wear them to school. She also loves shorts, yet because her legs are so long and she actually has a butt, the teachers and students publicly call her out on it. More than once she had to change shorts that weren't indecent when other girls didn't have to, and their shorts were indecent.

Daniela was branded a slut because of her shorts and her body type. In reality, she hasn't even had her first kiss.

Because of those girls and guys that teased her, I'm starting eighth grade without her. Daniela chose to transfer to another school (a private school fifteen minutes away) for one year rather than go to my middle school. She still lives in the same house, yet she transferred schools.

Daniela won't be going to my high school next year, either. She's going to another school, just a town away, because the private school is only for middle school.

I'm ashamed that I couldn't stop the bullying. I only had one class with her, and I defended her to others, but it wasn't enough. I lost one of my only new friends to bullying, to the word "slut."
