EP3 - Among Geniuses (2)

When people hear the word composition, they typically think of simply creating a song. However, composition requires a lot of preparation beforehand. And first-year students mainly learn about those preparations. Formal composition classes start in the second semester, and in the first semester, students take various classes along with other majors to lay the groundwork.

These include poetry, music appreciation, music theory, ensemble, music history, and performance. Composition classes are held only once a week. That was regrettable. It increases to twice a week starting in the second semester and even more in the second year. Still, those classes are not entirely useless. Especially, piano performance. Piano lessons continue from the first year to the third year.

Since piano performance is also included in exams, that says it all. In that regard, Kim Taeyoung was very fortunate. In our school, or rather in Korea, there's no high school student who plays the piano better than Kim Taeyoung. Watching Kim Taeyoung's fingers move brilliantly on the keys, one couldn't help but admire. How can fingers move so freely like that?

And it's not just me who admires. Students, including teachers, are impressed. After finishing the performance, Kim Taeyoung stood up and came to sit next to me.

Somewhere, faint applause could be heard. Whether acknowledging it or not, Kim Taeyoung was casually loosening his wrist.

"Is your wrist hurting?"

Kim Taeyoung shakes his head.

"It's just a habit. Pianists need to take good care of their wrists. And compared to the piano I usually play, the touch of the digital keyboard is so light that it's not that tiring."

This time, I nod my head. After that, several piano performances followed. Everyone had decent piano skills. Soon, it was my turn.

I sit down and play the piano. Thanks to my lessons from Won Seongmin, I've reached a decent level. It's still average, but that's not bad.

I couldn't even reach average before.

"You're better than I thought."

"Are you mocking me?"

"I'm serious."

Returning from playing the piano, I sit down, giving a vague response to Kim Taeyoung's welcoming. Then I look at the other students.

At that moment, Kim Taeyoung spoke up.

"What about club activities? Will you join?"

"I'm not sure. How about you?"

"I'll do whatever you do. If you do, I'll do it. If you don't, I won't."

I felt a chill down my spine at Kim Taeyoung's words.

Does this kid have an interest in me?

Why is he following me?

Shaking my head slightly, I chin my hand.

Clubs, clubs. I've never tried club activities in my past life. It's not mandatory but optional. You don't have to do it. But there are too many benefits to be gained through clubs.

It's not just about extra points or connections. Of course, those are important, but the biggest benefit is the stage.

To be more precise, the stage you can stand on during the school festival. The festivals at Seolwon High School are very elaborate. It's inevitable because entertainment agency officials come to cast during the festivals every time.

In essence, it's almost like a group audition. Ultimately, they seek popular music. To make a living, you have to become a singer. So, students prepare for the festival very thoroughly.
