the lense family were known around the canadian region as exquisite.

mrs lense was adored for her salad days. her beautiful nights skating on ice as she was praised up in the lights and morning paper. her beautiful leaps and jumps, elegant movements, and photographs on the olympian podium were in a category of their own. michèle lense - a native of quebec, with french roots. she whom advocated for her province's sovereignty.

mr lense, treasured for his economic success. his name under multiple agricultural properties - ones whose production singlehandedly boosted their commercial and subsistence farming industries. his well earned degree and adverse boyhood, simply a story to idolize greatly.

remmy lense, the oldest daughter. world phenom figure skater, olympian, and national champ. she took after her mother, all beauty and brains. she wasn't just the poster child of the lense family, but also of all families. if you knew remmy, you'd ask yourself how a daughter could get any better than her.

sofia lense, the unhinged dreamer. did this girl get the ice skating genes? no. but, did she get the analytical entrepreneurial passion genes? yes. although constantly lectured on the phone about her lack of money or work in LA, she never quit or gave up. she was always continuing to think up dress sketches or marketing ideas. it was her work ethic alone that was going to make her rich one day.

riley lense, the youngest and most hardworking for her age. the girl is 5'3 116 getting scouted by ucla at just 16 years old. there was always an unsureness when it came to her decision to pursue club soccer over ice skating like the rest of the family, but her parents soon found why in her on-field performance. not to mention her likeable off-field personality and unweighted 4.00 gpa. she didn't usually get thrown into the comparisons of the lense sisters, because she was in her own lane.

then there was serena lense, the wide-eyed deranged black sheep of their family. in san diego she was perfect, but her hometown still whispers her name in disapproving chatter for the path she took. she was always in some sort of trouble, and chose to waste her god-given talents of ice skating and academics. instead of braiding her hair and climbing trees with the other children, she was too busy antagonizing vicious dogs, pelting snowballs at neighbors, and continuously had a search party out for her in the woods.

and liam lense. who could ever forget about little liam lense? he was the child whose chapters ended too early. if you thought serena was notoriously known for finding trouble as a youngster, liam was always the perpetrator. he was there for every hellhound chase, thrown snowball, and time-out after disappearing in the woods behind the lense home for hours. liam lense, the little 5'2 powerhouse whose giggle echoes the streets. the boy whose fragile bones fought their way through his entire life, but also the boy whose heart fought its way through only fifteen years of it. liam lense, the boy who looked at his twin sister like she put the stars in the sky. the boy who understood her thoughts and actually listened to her ideas. the little boy who saw her as more than a shadow to her sisters. liam lense. the beautiful boy who died.

the only thing more tragic than his death was knowing that he could've been saved.

grief was a hellish thing. it affected all people differently. some ignored it, some became stronger, and some spiraled.

no one knew what to do when serena lense couldn't accept her twin brother's passing.

michèle and kiernan lense poured their heart and souls into helping serena navigate her grief and recover, but the girl's cognitive immobility made her unable to notice all this. all she saw was her brother's empty room and buried boxes in the attic.

perhaps this is what caused their disconnect. perhaps this is why she could never come home - her helplessness haunts her.

certain images still stain her mind. they sting, but as they deepen further they're warm and nostalgic. they're happy, just almost.

serena felt happy around liam.

maybe the memories were painful, but the feelings were broad. there was so much love. a type of love that reminded her of a one and only place.

san diego.
