This is 1929 words long. Wow. Look at me go. I wasn't gonna post this today but I don't want to wait.

Nobody has ever really understood Stiles and Derek's friendship. They don't understand how Derek—being two grades ahead of Stiles—became friends with the younger boy. They don't understand how the two became so close over just a matter of days. They don't understand how Stiles managed to pick up sign language so fast.

School was really hard for Derek. Everyone knew he was deaf, he was born deaf, and the hearing aid his parents paid an arm and a leg for didn't do much to help him. He was allowed to have a translator in his classes but fought the school and his parents on the idea because he didn't want more attention being drawn to him. He could read lips really well, that was enough for him. But, some days the teachers would forget. They'd talk to fast or face the board too often or they'd have the lights off for a presentation. Derek would stop trying on days like that. Days like today.

"Are you okay?" Stiles asked him, stopping the older boy from walking away so he could sign to him.

Derek nodded. "Great."

Stiles sighed. "Come on, what's wrong?" He huffed, letting his hands drop and hit his legs harshly.

"Same shit. Different day."

Stiles nodded. "I'm sorry, Der. I'll help you."

"That's the thing though!" Derek snapped. "You shouldn't have to! You should be focused on your work, not mine! You're a sophomore and you're always teaching yourself stuff you won't need until senior year! It's not fair!"

Stiles gave him a small smile. "I'm doing it by choice. I want to. Okay?"

Derek clenched his fists, nodding at the boy in front of him.

"Let's go get lunch." Stiles smiled, again.

Derek sighed as the lights around his house flickered. His dad had it set up so when someone rang the doorbell they would do that. He pushed himself off the couch and answered the door. There was some delivery guy standing on his porch who started talking to fast for him to understand.

"I'm sorry, can you speak slower?" Derek had taught himself how to speak out loud, although, it was still really difficult for him and he was never sure if he was saying the words correctly.

The guy rolled his eyes, "What are you, deaf?"

"Actually, asshole, he is." Derek's younger sister Cora came up behind him, crawling under Derek's arm to stand protectively in front of her brother.

"Shit, I'm sorry."

Cora started on some rant toward the guy as Derek walked away.

He was use to this. People being rude because they don't know. It still hurt all the same though. He constantly felt like a burden to everyone around him, especially his family. They'd completely altered everything to make it easier for Derek. He hated that. His parent's fought him on driving for a whole year before they even let him get his permit. His dad finally caved and taught him how to drive. He still depends a lot on others to take him places despite having his own car and license now simply because the task of driving was a lot of extra work for him. He had to be even more aware of everything around him than hearing people had to be.

Derek heard a pounding on his door, it was less than actually 'hearing it' and more like when you get a ringing in your ear. He took his hearing aid out throwing it on his bedside table seeing the lights flicking on and off.
