"I love you more," I reply, kissing the top of her head. I smile as I say, "My angel."

Years later...

Devonne's P.O.V.

I was careful every day for the past two years. I was so careful. And then, one day, I just...wasn't.
I stood in front of my mirror, my wings unfurled. I thought she was at work. I was wrong.
"Oh my god."
I spun around, in my haste knocking over a mirror on the dresser. It fell to the floor, shattering with a loud sound.
"I can explain—" I say, quickly folding and retracting my wings.
"You're an angel?" she asks in disbelief. I pull on the parka that I'd tossed on the chair. My heart races as I go over to her.
"Yes," I say breathlessly, taking her hand before she can leave. "I can explain."
"You're not human. Oh my god, did you know about Demetria?"
My face pales, and I feel my heart beat even faster.
"You did," she says softly, her eyes brimming with tears. "Do you even love me? Are you using me like she did?" she accuses, making my heart break.
"I love you!" I plead. "Please, just listen to me," I beg, and she looks down. She tries to pull her hand out of mine, but it's a half-hearted attempt.
"Who are you?"
"I'm Devonne. Demetria's sister," I finally say, and her head jerks up.
Her expression changes from one of confusion to one of anger.
"You're in this together—" She pulls her hand from mine and starts to turn around.
"Wait!" I exclaim, slamming the door with my will and making her scream in surprise. I hold it closed as she tries to get out. "Let me explain."
"Stay away from me," she gasps, looking at me as tears stream down her face.
"Just listen. I've never hurt you, and I have no plan to," I assure her, but it seems in vain. She starts screaming.
The sound hurts my ears. I growl, and I feel my wings pressing against my back, trying to unfurl.
"Stop," I say, but she's too loud.
She keeps screaming, her hands over her own ears and her eyes closed tightly.
"STOP!" I scream, the sound shaking the house. My wings unfurl, sending out a ripple of wind like a wave.
Her screaming stops, and she looks at me with wide eyes. My parka is now torn and on the ground. I fold my wings but don't retract them.
I clear my throat and look to her. "Listen to me."
She nods wordlessly, having calmed down a bit. She's more in awe now as she stares at my wings.
"Demetria is my sister. She's a fallen angel. A demon." Her eyes widen slightly, but I continue, "I'm Devonne. I'm still an angel. I chose you as my mate before Demetria even got to you. But she reached you first. She charmed you, and no matter how much I told her to stay way, she wouldn't. I had to step in."
"Why didn't you do something sooner?" she asks, her voice trembling.
"I...I thought she would move on immediately," I admit.
She bites her lip, and I step forward to help her up.
She shrinks back, and I falter. Is she really scared of me?
"I won't harm you," I tell her, feeling hurt.
"How do I know you're not manipulating me, too?" she asks, and I open my mouth to respond. But I have no words. She can't know. That's the problem.
"You don't," I finally say. "You just have to trust me. I love you."
She smile slightly. "I do love you. It doesn't feel the same with you as it did with her. It felt fluid...abstract with her. With you, it feels real," she says, and I finally help her up. She doesn't pull away.
"That's because it is real," I say, my face mere inches from hers.
"I'm sorry I acted like that," she whispers, her eyes meeting mine.
"I'm sorry I hadn't told you sooner," I reply, and she smiles.
"It's okay," she tells me before leaning in and pressing her lips to mine.
I feel her hand move to my wing, gently stroking the feathers.
"You're so beautiful," she whispers, making my heart flutter.
I might be the ethereal being, but she makes my heart race as if she's the angel.
"So are you," I breathe, pulling her closer.

I never thought it would work out. I thought as soon as she found out who I was, she would leave. But she didn't.
