"Tell me you love me," she whispers against my lips. An endearing term gradually turned toxic. I pull away and look at the ring adorning my hand. It feels like a noose tying me to her. I meet her beautiful brown eyes again. I don't feel the same shock I used to when I would look at her.
My hand moves to my ring. Her expression changes to one of confusion. I pull off my ring and shake my head.
"I'm not ready."
"What are you doing?" She looks panicked.
"I'm sorry. I can't do this," I whisper, putting the ring in her hand. "I'm sorry," I repeat as I move away from her. Her heart is shattered, and I know it. So is mine. But I can't do this.
I turn from her, avoiding the eye of anyone in the audience before walking back up the aisle, leaving at the alter the woman I still love.
