Surprise

It's the day after Christmas. You and your girlfriend have exchanged gifts—but she's in another country...

You awaken to a knock on the door. It's early in the morning—you don't know who would come this early. Today nonetheless.
You groan and get out of bed. Usually, you'd ignore anyone who would come at this hour, but you decide to humor whoever it is. You run your hands through your hair a few times before going over to the door.
You don't even bother to look through the peephole. You just throw open the door. Your heart practically stops.
"Demi?" you ask in disbelief. She smiles, her eyes shining brightly.
"That's me," she says, and you look her over. She's dressed casually, and there's a huge suitcase by her side.
"You're here," you say, still in shock.
"I am. Can you let me in? It's fucking freezing," she says, laughing slightly.
"Oh right. I'm sorry," you say, letting her in. She lugs her suitcase inside and puts it by the door. You close the door behind her and look to her. She's standing here in front of you. She's even more beautiful in person. It's an understatement to say that you're shook. You'd never met in real life before. No number of FaceTime calls and late night texting could compare to this.
You can't stop yourself—you throw your arms around her. She lets out a little sound of surprise, but she hugs you back. You bury your face in her shoulder and breathe in her scent. She smells even better than you'd thought she would.
"I love you," she says, making your heart skip a beat.
"I love you more," you whisper back, pulling away to look at her face.
"Impossible," she replies, smiling. You just look at her face. She's so gorgeous. She looks away from you to your apartment. "It's so weird to see you and your apartment for real," she says. You'd given her a tour of your place a couple of times—you'd mention even if you got a new lamp. I mean, she needs to know that kind of stuff.
"Right out of the screen of your computer," you joke, and she smiles.
"You're even prettier in person," she says, her eyes flickering across every feature of your face.
"Thanks," you reply, feeling your cheeks flush slightly. "You, too."
You see her look a little way behind you.
"Is that me?" she questions, walking past you to the picture of her.
"Yeah," you say, feeling embarrassed.
"This is new," she comments.
"I put it up just yesterday," you admit, and she looks back to you.
"I put up another picture of you the other day, too," she tells you, making you smile.
This is so surreal. You can't believe she's really here. You also can't believe that you're just standing here having a casual conversation even though it's the absolute first time you've ever seen her in the four years you've known each other.
"Can I hug you again?" you ask, and she raises an eyebrow.
"Of fucking course," she responds, opening her arms. You pull her close, as if she's going to disappear at any moment.
"I love you so much," you breathe, and she lets out a breath by your ear.
"I love you more."
This time it's your turn to tell her, "Impossible."
