You knew her kid was only 3 years old but you couldn't help but worry that she might hate you. You had never been good with kids and you weren't sure if you were ready to meet Alex's. You were happy that she was confident enough in your relationship to introduce you to her daughter but you worried that after seeing how terrible you were with kids, she would end up dumping you.
"(y/n), you're over thinking things. Charlie is a child. Just make funny faces at her and give her some toys."
"Kids hate me and I'm not good with them either. It's not as easy as making funny faces and giving them toys."
"You're exaggerating. Dealing with adults is harder than dealing with kids. Kids are easier to please if you get them the toys they want."
"I feel like Alex will be mad if I buy out the toy section for Charlie."
"Maybe but the kid will love you."
"I don't know. I don't think it sounds like a good idea."
"Think of it this way. You might get in trouble but the kid will love you forever. If you really want to marry her, I suggest that you make sure that Charlie doesn't hate you."
"Fine but I'm blaming you if Alex gets mad at me."
"You should be thanking me for saving your relationship"

Alex is surprised to walk into your living room filled with new toys. Charlie screams in delight as she sees her favorite character in several of the toys and makes a run for them.
"Explain."
Her unusually calm tone made you panic and sweat a little.
"I was worried that she wouldn't like me so one of my friends suggested that I buy her toys so she would like me."
"What friend was this?"
"(friend's name)"
"That explains it. I don't understand why you would think that their plan was such a good idea."
"I'm sorry, Alex. This was dumb."
She makes her way over to pull you in for a kiss.
"I admit that it was dumb but I appreciate that you went through the effort so she could like you. A word of advice next time, Charlie would've also been happy if you had just gotten her a toy."
"Now you tell."
