Pen Name: Katy Cage

Username: katycage

Is your pen name your legal name? If no, then how did you make up one?

Katy Cage is a pseudonym. It sort of just popped into my head and sounded catchy, so I went with it.

How many books have you published till date?

I've published several on Wattpad over the years, some of which I've since removed or decided to come back to later. But I currently have two novels and one short story up.

What are your future projects?

My work in progress is THE FOUL AND THE FAIR, a YA fantasy-adventure about witches who journey across a magical land with a pair of human brothers in order to break their curses. Regular updates being this Friday (August 9th)! Towards the end of 2019, I will begin working on the sequel to BLOOD WAR, which is a Paid Story about a half-breed girl living in a community of feuding supernaturals.

What is writing to you?

That's profound! For me, writing is the lifeblood of my existence, which sounds dramatic but is quite true. I feel like I was put on this earth to write, to create stories, and I will do so until my final days.

Is being an author, your long-time dream or a hidden passion you found out later?

I'm only nineteen years old, but I discovered my love and talent for the craft when I was twelve or thirteen. When I started writing outside of school, I realized, "Yes, this is what I want to do. This is what I was born to do." So I suppose it's both a long-time dream and a hidden passion, and I definitely intend to pursue a career as a full-time author.

What genre books you like to work on?

Anything fantastical or supernatural. Almost all of my works have some kind of paranormal and mythological elements to them. Recently, I've been very interested in writing horror, which is strange because I hate reading/watching horror. Will I pursue it? Only time will tell.

If we challenge you to write a book of another genre we suggest, then would you take it up?

Depends on the genre. I can't do romance or teen fiction or anything contemporary. To me, those subjects are just too boring on their own; I need some magic and peril to spice things up. But I might consider writing something in the mystery/thriller genre.

Then we would like to read a Gothic Romance genre book from you soon.

Writing is a reality that paints a beautiful fantasy. What do you think are the charms of writing fiction/non-fiction books?

Well, I have no experience writing or even reading non-fiction. I usually read to escape reality, so anything remotely close to real-world things makes me snore. Lol. But fiction—especially fantasy, paranormal, sci-fi, etc.—allows the writer to create their own world, and the reader to experience a new one. That's exciting to me, the ability to reinvent the universe.

Who are your favorite authors in and out of Wattpad?

I'm not a huge reader on Wattpad, but I think some of the best writers are, of course, my fellow Paid authors and the Stars. They have all earned their accolades and accomplishments through hard work. Their stories are well-written, unique, diverse, and overall wonderful. Outside of Wattpad, I'm always a fan of YA fantasy authors—Leigh Bardugo, Sarah J. Maas, and Holly Black are big influencers of mine. Also, I would be a terrible fantasy writer if I didn't worship Tolkein and Lewis, whose stories were some of the first that I came into contact with.

Name few of your close Wattpad friends.

I have lots of friends on Wattpad! I've known Carolyn_Hill perhaps the longest. She first critiqued an old version of BLOOD WAR way back in 2017. oderawrites and I have a blast PMing each other almost every day. Some people I interact with frequently on Wattpad and/or Twitter are LittleCinnamon, squirrelg, AWFrasier,  and so many more!

What is your favorite series you have recently watched or read?

I just finished watching Stranger Things 3. That show is incredible. It's been a while since I read a book series, actually. The most recent books on my list have been stand-alones. If anyone has recommendations (especially fantasy), I'd love to hear them!

Who is your favorite actor/actress?

Gosh, I don't really have one. There are too many to choose from, anyway! I might say Jennifer Lawrence because she's so hilarious and weird, and she doesn't at all seem like an elite from Hollywood. It's refreshing.

Who is your favorite Villain you couldn't help but love?

No one beats Cersei Lannister. I also liked the Darkling from the SHADOW AND BONE trilogy. And just for a shameless plug, I'll include one of my own characters: Dante from my book BLOOD WAR dances on that line between good guy and bad guy. He's one of my favorites to write about.

What are your hobbies other than writing and reading?

Thinking about writing and reading? Lol. I love music, food, and traveling—especially when they're all combined!

What are your hidden talents?

Oh, no. The dreaded question . . . Singing, probably. I used to be a theater performer when I was young and even took private singing lessons. Now, I only sing in the shower. Or while cleaning. I'm also pretty good at drawing trees—but nothing else, lol.

Who is your first celebrity crush?

Definitely the Jonas Brothers, with a particular emphasis on Joe. *swoons*

What is the most embarrassing situation that you have ever been through?

Life.

One craziest thing you have ever done?

I'm going to wisely refrain from answering this because it may or may not have been illegal. Haha, but seriously . . .

There are many authors who just started their journey and many readers who want to write but has no courage to do so. Please give them a tip and a word of encouragement.

Silence the little voice in your head that says, "You can't." Because you can. When you first start out, your writing doesn't need to be good. It just needs to be. The more you do it, the more you'll learn, and the better you'll become. So just start typing—it really is that easy.

Last but not the least, have you ever dreamt of writing your own comic?

No. What a unique question! Haha, that has literally never crossed my mind before.
